Lisa Daley Wins Bronze at World Masters Championships

Lisa Daley and I were fortunate to attend the Master’s World Athletics Championships in Malaga, Spain earlier this month.  For those that are not familiar, WMA (World Masters Athletics) organizes this track and field, cross country and road championships every two years.  The location changes and is announced a couple of years prior.  There is also an indoor championship that is on the alternate year of the outdoor event.  It draws the most elite and experienced masters (35 years and older) from around the world.  And it’s not just track…there are road 10k, half marathon, cross country and race walking…

Central Park Track Club M50+ Wins National Cross Country Championship

The core of distance running is going after it, again and again, hoping that in the end the work pays off with accomplishment and improvement. The current crop of CPTC 50+ harriers has been going after a national title for many years, hoping one year they could get on top. One year they were third,  last year they broke through to second, and in 2018 they broke the tape in first, national champs. The win did not come easily, since getting a five-member team to an away race is never easy. Families were asked to be understanding, employers had to…

CPTC Member Jaclyn Gilbert’s Novel About Running Celebrated

CPTCer Jaclyn Gilbert’s Late Air, is almost here. Official publishing date is November 13, 2018, but readers, including many teammates,  came together in New York City to celebrate the novel. “Late Air is a story of the world of elite female athletic performance like no other novel I can think of. In her debut, Gilbert is alternately a miner, a sculptor, a guiding ghost, but always a virtuoso—showing us the athlete’s body as a perfectible object, a vessel for obsessions, a target, and a site for the recuperation of the athlete’s humanity.” —Alexander Chee, author of Edinburgh, The Queen of the Night, and How to…

Outdoor Track Recap from the Masters Men

Sherman Lau Photo: John Tran The outdoor track season kicked off back in April, when CPTC sent a 40-49 age-group 4 x 400m relay team to compete at the Penn Relays. The team of Sherman Lau, Peter Brady, Neil Fitzgerald and Gerry O’Hara finished 5th in 3:47.1. It was a very respectable showing in a sprint event for a team composed primarily of middle distance runners and there was unanimous agreement that Gerry was the team MVP for arranging VIP parking at his son’s fraternity and cold beers after the race! Road Captain David Alm gave this summary of his track…
