Gerry O’Hara Photo: Andy Kiss The CPTC M40 team is an absolute force in New York City road racing. Other teams have a lot of talented runners, but our depth is unparalleled. And we proved it with yet another first place finish at what is arguably the most competitive race of the year: Team Champs. We are solidly in first place for 2019, and it’s truly been a team effort, in this past race especially. As Coach Tony said after our victory, “Congrats on being great when it mattered most!” That’s for all of us. Now, to our scorers: Osvaldo Martinez led our…

Athlete Profile: Sam Ruddock Steals 2nd Place at USA Pentathlon Men’s Individual National Championship

By Meggie Sullivan Having joined Central Park Track Club in the winter of 2019, Sam Ruddock is the Club’s first-ever Modern Pentathlete—not be confused with track and field’s pentathlon or decathlon. Modern Pentathlon, for us lay folks and runners, is an Olympic sport that consists of five events: épée fencing, a 200-meter freestyle swim, horse show jumping, and a 3200-meter race combined with four stops for laser pistol shooting. The combination of events was inspired by the concept of the “ideal soldier” and was first integrated into the 1912 Olympics.  Ruddock, a member of Team USA, started his journey as…

Report of Hank Schiffman of the 60+ & 70+: Queens 10k

Our 60+ men had an acute case of evaporating starters. The registration roll looked stout, but come gun time we had but three 60 runners 60 – 69; all crossed the line. Who would have thunk Dennis O’Donnell, our returned prodigal son of the 5k and marathon, would be our next high card?  Charles Parchment Photo: Hank Schiffman Noel Labat-Comess, 41:56 / 78.98% and Charles Parchment, 42:47 / 77.39% (last year 45:08 / 71.69%), both ran brilliantly. But our “would be” third fast scorer was vaporware . Had Dennis, 49:25 / 67.63%, known he was our third scorer, he surely would…
