Race Report from Colleen McGurk of the 40+ Women: Team Championships

Persistence, Tenacity and Grit! That’s what we all witnessed from the Master Women who led us to a first place finish at club champs as well as placing us in the overall lead for NYRR club points! Just WOW! Our scoring team was led by Paige Yellen (31:13), Jen St. Jean (31:31) and Amy Kvilhaug (34:30). These three amazing women were relentless and all grit leading us to the CHAMPIONS of club champs and also placing us in the overall lead for NYRR club points. Paige and Jen also placed 2nd and 3rd in their age group! Simply killing it!…

Race Report from Laurence Go of the 40+ men: Team Championships

Team Champs was on a perfect late July morning.  That is, if your idea of perfect is hot and humid.  Great for the beach but not ideal for fast racing.  However, the 40+ men defied Mother Nature on this day.  We finished 2nd, finally breaking our 3rd place streak. This 2nd place finish, in an important double points race, put distance on the 4th place team chasing us and places us in a virtual tie for second place (details below).   Our Scorers:   Peter Brady, 27:40, 2nd in age (45-49), 84.26% Jeremy Shingleton, 28:22, 5th in age (40-44), 78.47%…

Race Report from Jacy Kruzel & Veronica Jackson of the Open: Team Championships

The Open Women competed with tenacity, teaming, and speed to come away with the win at the NYRR Club Championship! With the competitive nature of NYRR, this is no little feat. Speaking in cross country terms, our spread from our first scorer to our last, was only one minute and 6 seconds! A coaches dream! 9 girls ran under 30 and 7 ran PRs!!! Our first runner was Veronica Jackson, leading the team with a new PR in 29:01.  She loved the fun energy on and off the course. In her own words: On a day when things weren’t quite…

Race Report from Hank Schiffman of the 60+ & &0+ Men: Team Championships

With injuries endemic among our 60+ men, an uncertain scoring situation arose for this year’s Team Championships. Concern evaporated as race results proved our talent pool to be deep. Brooklyn RR too has been beset with similar injuries; they could not fill in the void. Taconic RR had their knives sharpened and won the day. Yet David Blumel bested them all. We took 2nd for 2 x 12 points in the team points tally. And for the first time, we scored in mens 70+, also taking 2nd… how sweet. Race Report from Sylvie Kimche of the 60+ & 70+ Women: Team Championships

It was oppressively humid (97%) but reasonably hot (72°F) at the very early start of the women’s Team Championships race. It did not matter…. The CPTC ladies came out in force (see the amazing first place results of the open and 40+ masters!) The 4 valiant golden ladies who toed the line took 1st place in the W70+ (Lynn Blackstone, Judith Tripp and Sylvie Kimche) and 4th place in the W60+ (Deborah Barchat with Judith & Sylvie double-dipping…). (FYI, 2 of our regular W60+ scorers were absent: Barbara Byrne, spending time in England with her grandchildren & Sherrel Harmon, still recovering…

Outdoor Track Recap from the Masters Men

Sherman Lau Photo: John Tran The outdoor track season kicked off back in April, when CPTC sent a 40-49 age-group 4 x 400m relay team to compete at the Penn Relays. The team of Sherman Lau, Peter Brady, Neil Fitzgerald and Gerry O’Hara finished 5th in 3:47.1. It was a very respectable showing in a sprint event for a team composed primarily of middle distance runners and there was unanimous agreement that Gerry was the team MVP for arranging VIP parking at his son’s fraternity and cold beers after the race! Road Captain David Alm gave this summary of his track…

Race Reports from the Women: Queens 10k

Report from Jacy Kruzel and Veronica Jackson of the Open: Congratulations to all of our Queens 10k runners! The Central Park Track Club Open Women’s team came in a strong second place at this year’s Queens 10k. A warm and curvy course made everyone work for it, but our summer training is clearly paying off.  Finishing only 40 seconds off first place and almost 3 minutes ahead of third, this result puts us in a great position heading into our next team points race: the Team Championships on July 28th. Make sure to mark your calendars, as the Team Championships…

Race Reports from the Men: Queens 10k

Report from David Alm of the 40+: It was hot, but not nearly as humid as last year’s Queens 10K. Rarely have I heard so many year-on-year comparisons made in the moments before a race. Nevertheless, we still managed to place 3rd, thanks in part to an assist from our friends Brad Kelley and Mark Lindrud in the 50+ cohort (thanks guys!)  One of CPTC’s newest quadragenarians, Jeremy Shingleton, led us from the start, finishing in a swift 35:41, good for 3rd AG placement as well.  “I’ve always been on the bubble of scoring” for the open men’s team, Jeremy…
