This Sunday's post-marathon party will be held at Opal, 251 East 52nd Street (2nd Avenue) from 2:30 pm - 6:30 pm. We have a private room booked called the Back Bar. CPTC marathoners, spectators and friends are all encouraged to come along to share and continue the excitement of Marathon Sunday.
Comma and Punishment
October 25, 2006
We know that most people don't share our obsession with grammar and punctuation, but they should, since a poorly written sentence can have very expensive consequences. How expensive? As today's Times reports today, one comma may cost Canada's largest cable television provider one million dollars. True, that's Canadian dollars, but they're worth almost as much as American dollars these days — $880,000 (American) in this case. A good proofreader could have been hired for a lot less.

Talkin' Baseball
October 24, 2006
Wondering why so many of today's posts mention baseball? It's not because of the Fall Classic, which we're not watching, but rather because we received an email complaining "So little baseball coverage on the CPTC Web site!" That email, by the way, came from a St. Louis Cardinals fan, who had the good sense to not send it until five days after the Cards beat the Mets in the playoffs.
Arizona Relay Race
October 24, 2006
John Prather writes:
Anybody want to run a 185-mile relay in Arizona on March 30-31? . If so, I'll coordinate (and run). If you're a baseball fan, that's the final weekend of spring training. We can have up to 12 runners on the team. Email me at johnprather1@cox.net if you're interested.
Blogwallah
October 24, 2006
Ligaya Mishan has forsaken cross-country racing for cross-continent trekking. Unlike her last trip to Asia, this vacation will only last a month. But at least that means a month of new travel writing on her blog. As always, it's better than anything you'll find here.
Chicago Marathon
October 24, 2006
We're sure you've all heard about the slip and slide finish at the Chicago Marathon. You can see the video of Robert Cheruiyot's wild finish here. By the way, if any major league baseball players are reading this — and we really, really hope some of them do read this page regularly — we hope they'll watch this video and remember that sliding is not the fastest way to get to the finish line or to first base.
As We All Know, There's Nothing More Effective Than An Internet Petition
October 24, 2006
Now that CPTC is getting back to our true colors, it's time for that other great New York team that wears orange and blue to do so as well. We're talking about the Mets, obviously. The Knicks also wear orange and blue, nobody would ever call them "great." Or even "good." In fact, they'll be lucky to rise to the level of mediocrity this year. But back to the Mets, and their annoying insistence on wearing those black jerseys and caps. Which is why we gladly signed the Ditch the Black petition, and encourage all fans of baseball -- and of good taste in uniforms -- to do so as well. Or at least read it, because it uses phrases like "chromatic supremacy."
Market Research
October 20, 2006
We are are conducting a product study for serious runners or triathletes in midtown on the 30th or 31st of this month.Interested individuals would need to be between the ages of 25-35. I happen to be a tri-guy myself but I'm too old as are my cronies. I would love to help my fellow athletes so if interested please email me at jt@probemarket.com or call 212-922-9777. Again these are 1-on-1 interviews involving common products that runners/triathletes buy. Compensation is $150 cash for each participant interview of 1 1/2 hours.
Thank You,

That's Always Been Our Benchmark
October 18, 2006
Question of the day on Runner's World: "If I'm Not Limping Around After A Marathon, Is It True That I Didn't Push Myself Hard Enough?"
NYC Goes Orange
October 18, 2006
It's the second annual NYC Goes Orange week, which the Food Bank site describes as "a citywide public awareness and fundraising initiative to help ensure
that all New Yorkers connect the color orange with hunger relief." Presumably the point of the week is also to actually do some work towards hunger relief, but we have neither the time nor the interest to read through the site for proof of that.

Orange Singlets
October 18, 2006
CPTC runners can show their true colors again, and just in time! The new orange singlets produced by Nike are scheduled to arrive on Friday, November 3rd (two days before the NYC Marathon). In addition, matching blue shorts will be arriving prior to that. Both of these items are complimentary thanks to our sponsorship deal with Nike. They will be available to all our fully paid-up members to race in. The priority when the singlets arrive will be to distribute them and the shorts to all our New York City marathoners. Times and places for pick-up on Friday evening and Saturday during the day will be posted the week of the marathon.
In addition, the Nike blue jacket and pants will be available for purchase in a couple of months time. Ordering information will be posted once we have determined the cost. The classic orange CPTC jacket is still available for purchase at $50, email Alan Ruben at aruben@montran.com if interested.
If you have not yet paid your 2006 dues you can send your check payable to Central Park Track Club for $75 ($25 for students) to:
Richard Kixmiller
14 East 96th Street
Apt 14
New York, NY 10025
You can also pay via PayPal by sending money to 'cptc AT courtines.net. If you choose this option, you must do a payment from your bank account. Credit card payments will not be accepted.
If you have been coming to our workouts and have not yet joined CPTC, please print out and mail in the application form.

Lance Armstrong Marathon Pool
October 16, 2006
Thom Little will be collecting money for the Lance Armstrong Marathon prediction pool at this workout and at Thursday's workout. Email him your prediction at newyorkgiants@mac.com. He does not want to take down predictions at the workouts.
Ex-CPTC Race Results
October 16, 2006
Allison McCabe ran a PR at the Tufts Health Plan 10K for Women last week, finishing 35th out of over 6,000 runners, and beating Joan Benoit -Samuelson by three seconds. Alas, it doesn't go on the results page, since she has finally accepted that she'll be a Boston resident for some time, and has moved on to a Beantown-based team.
Further afield, Jan Stouber, who ran for CPTC until he moved to Portland, Oregon, ran the Portland Marathon in 3:23:23 (6th M55-59). This was his first marathon in 17 years, so it's not surprising that it's a little slower than the 2:36:24 he ran in NYC in 1984. That was the fastest of the five sub-3:00 NYC Marathons he ran for CPTC, and ranks him 46th on the CPTC marathon list and 31st on the CPTC NYC Marathon list.
Richie Stewart
October 11, 2006
We are saddened to report that Richie Stewart's father has passed away. There will be a viewing today from 4:00 pm - 8:00 pm at House of Hills Funeral Home, 406 Rogers Avenue (corner of at Sterling Street) in Brooklyn. To get there by subway, take the 2 or 5 to the Sterling Street stop, or the D or Q to the Prospect Park stop.
"He Didn't Raise His Fist — But He Did Lend A Hand"
October 9, 2006
Australian sprinter Peter Norman died last week at age 64. Norman won the Silver Medal in the 200m at the 1968 Olympics, but is better known as the white guy everyone always forgets about in the photo of Tommie Smith and John Carlos giving a black-power salute during the playing of the national anthem. Norman didn't join in the action — which would have looked pretty weird — but he did wear an "Olympic Project for Human Rights" badge that Carlos gave him before the medal ceremony.
Smith and Carlos were kicked out of the Olympic Village for their protest, and Norman faced his share of criticism for supporting them. Now there's a statue of Smith and Carlos on the San Jose State Campus, and USA Track & Field declared today to be Peter Norman Day.
Masters Track
October 9, 2006
Julio Franco helped the Mets win the NLDS with his speed in Game 2, hustling to first in time to beat what should have been a double play throw, and enabling a run to score. This makes Franco the fastest 48-year-old this side of Stuart Calderwood and, should he ever retire from baseball, we'd like to invite him to a few CPTC workouts. We already know he looks good in orange and blue.
No More Track Workouts at Columbia for Distance Group
October 2, 2006
There will be no more outdoor track workouts at the Columbia Track this season for Tony's distance group.
This Tuesday Tony's distance group will be meeting at 7:00pm in Central Park at the Daniel Webster statue.
Lance Armstrong Marathon Pool
October 2, 2006
You may have heard that Lance Armstrong is running the NYC Marathon this year. And if you read any running other websites, you've probably come cross a discussion about just how fast he'll run, with users wildly speculating anything from 2:30 to 5:00. But few of them have the courage to put their money where their mouths are. Do you?
If so, come participate in the Lance Armstrong Marathon Pool. Unlike all the other gambling we promote on this site, we have nothing to do with organizing this, which explains why there are so many more participatns in this thanin anything else we've done. And there's real money involved. Well, $5, so barely anything real. Put the prize money will be a little more substantial. Here are the rules:
-
Each participant will make a prediction as to Lanc'es net time in the 2006 NYC Marathon. This is due to not knowing exactly where in the pack Lance will be starting. So the winning time will be the pick closest to his NET time - the time from when he crosses the start to when he reaches the finish. If for some reason his chip malfunctions and there is no net time, we will revert to his official time.
-
All picks must be in by Thursday, November 2nd at midnight. You need to get your pick and money to whomever is collecting by then, so we can compile the final list of times and email it to everyone involved before the race. Names and picks need to be made public to prevent any ex post facto disputes. Thom Little will be collecting for CPTC. If you would like to participate, email him at newyorkgiants@mac.com with your pick, and he will give you information on how to submit your money. If you run for another club, contact us, and we'll get you in touch with the right person.
-
Only one pick per person is allowed, at $5 each.
-
If the pot exceeds $200 (which it almost definitely will), 2nd and 3rd place prizes will be added. Second place will be 25% of the pot, third will be 10% (rounded up to the nearest dollar). For example, if the pot is $200, then 1st place would be $130, 2nd place is $50, and 3rd place is $20.
-
In the event that Lance does not start, money will be refunded and we will all be embarrassed for him. However, if he starts but does not finish, then a winner will still be declared assuming that someone has chosen DNF as a pick (but we will still be embarrassed for Lance). If no one has chosen DNF, then money will be refunded to all participants.
-
If two picks are equidistant to the final time, then the pot will be divided evenly between the winners. In that case, we will not award a 2nd place but would still award a 3rd place to the next closest time. If 3 or more picks are equidistant then we will divide the pot evenly between all the winners and not award a 2nd or 3rd place.
Book Review
October 2, 2006
Ligaya Mishan had another book review in yesterday's Times. Unlike her last Times review, this one has absolutely nothing to do with eating animal penises.
