The Grey Anorexic Lady

Included in Esquire s Things a Man Should Never Do Past 30 is a prohibition against reading Gawker. While in general this may be a good idea, following the rule too closely would deprive one of this: First they gave Mary-Kate Olsen a Times byline, but I did not speak out because I was not a Times reporter.

An Excuse To Stay Up Late Tonight

While The Departed may have won the Academy Award, the real best picture of 2006 was Can Mr. Smith Get to Washington Anymore? Although the film had screenings in DC and Boston, this movie never got released in the New York Metro Area. However, PBS (Channel 13) will air the film TONIGHT at 1:00AM. Even those without cable can watch the show! With no indoor track practice today, no one has an excuse not to watch this (or at least set their VCRs)! I m sure the movie will be the big topic of discussion at the Thursday evening workout!!…

Bronx Half Marathon

Belated congratulations to all of the CPTC runners who came up to the Bronx to run in the half marathon on February 11. The race used to be in July and it wasn’t too hot this time, but the extreme temperatures continue as it was very cold, especially for the spectators. With the change in date of the Brooklyn half marathon, many used the Bronx half as a tune up for Boston, (or other spring marathons) while others used the race as a tempo run. Katy Masselam (1:21:08) and Lauren Gustafson (1:21:13) finished first and second, each with a PR!…

Club Members Have Fantastic Race at Snowflake

It was a great team effort at the Snowflake run today. The women finished first, second, and third, (and eighth and ninth) to easily win the first club points race of the year. Congratulations to Aileen Conlon for winning her first Central Park road race and moving into second place on the Club four mile top ten list with a 22:46. Right behind Aileen was Kate Irvin, and a few seconds later, Lauren Gustafson. Kate and Lauren move into the third and fourth positions on the all time list. Ignore the NYRR website, which lists the CPTC men as coming…

Q&A Regarding Club Points Races Revisited

Q: I heard you made a mistake in your last journal entry! Are you telling me there s a way for us to keep score during the club competition this year? That would be great…… A: Yes, I did make a mistake, but no, there still is no good way to keep score mid-season. Q: So what was your mistake then? A: It turns out that it is not a forgone conclusion that we ll be dropping the March 8K. Q: Why not? A: Well, a few items came to my attention that I was not aware of. First, certain…

Marathon Racing Dangerous

From the New York Times, February 24, 1909: Marathon Racing Dangerous There is reason for viewing with considerable apprehension the sudden popularity of the so-called Marathon race—a race, that is, in which the competitors are men or boys and the distance is something over twenty-six miles. In this vicinity, where athletic sports are for the most part conducted under the more or less intelligent regulations of organized clubs, participation in these contests is usually freed form some of its dangers by barring from them would-be entrants who do not meet certain fixed rules as to age and health. Even here,…

It s the Most Wonderful Time of the Year

The NYRR Points Race Series kicks off this weekend, but another, more important contest is right around the corner. Yes, it s ESPN.com s annual Hottest Athletes poll. Okay, there s nothing about it on their site yet, but they re interviewing all the past winners they can — softball pitcher Jennie Finch (2003), soccer star Heather Mitts (2004), swimmer Amanda Beard (2005 and FHM s World s Sexiest Athlete), and ice-dancer Tanith Belbin (2006) — so clearly this year s competition is right around the corner. (Anna Kournikova won in 2002 but either refused to be interviewed, or the…
