Track and Cross Country on TV Alert

On Sunday, Friday s Tyson Invitational track meet from Arkansas will be on TV from 1:00 – 3:00 PM on ESPN2. Also on that telecast, there will be coverage of Saturday s USATF Cross Country Champsionships from Boulder (last year it was at Van Cortlandt), which promises to be quite a cross country meet, with almost all of the top US distance runners competing.

Thursday Night Workout Report February 8th, 2007

Old Man Winter decided to show up to yesterday s Thursday Night Workout, as the coldest Thursday of the year descended upon Central Park. But that didn t stop 36 resilient runners from meeting at the statue. While the weather was cold and crisp here, everyone felt thankful that Mother Nature spared us from the 100 inches of snow that Oswego, NY received over the past seven days. Only Alan Ruben decided to don shorts for the workout, while everyone else ran in pants or tights. Speaking of tights, several women in the club secretly admired Stuart Calderwood’s running tights.…

New Arrival

Congratulations to Michaela Carnes (wife of Glen) who gave birth to Eric Carroll Carnes on Tuesday morning. Both mom and the baby are healthy and doing well.

Members In The News

While we ve been running in brisk winter temperatures, one CPTC member has recently taken his running act to the mild climate of Bermuda. Longtime readers of this journal already know that this person is none other than the legendary Sid Howard. For the 28th time, Sid ran in the Fairmont to Fairmont 10K Road Race. According to local newspaper accounts, with his trademark racing style cycling cap, Sid has turned into somewhat of a celebrity on Bermuda. For the record, Sid first visited Bermuda in 1977, and has returned ever since. As he told the Mid Ocean News: “When…

American Record X 2

Congratulations to our American masters phenom, Marie-Louise Michelsohn, who set two American records for women 65-69 — outdoors in the mile in Florida on Jan. 20, and then five days later indoors in the 3K. Not a bad week s work, MLM. You can take the seventh day to rest. (Official times to follow — but lemme tell you — they were fast).

This year s Club Night will be held on Thursday, March 1st at the Hilton in midtown, from 6 pm until midnight. It should come as no great surprise that CPTC really racked up the accolades in 2006, with 12 individual nominations, a first-place finish for the women s open team, and second-place finish for the men s open team (not to mention a third-place finish for both our men s 40+ and 50+ teams). Indeed, this year s Club Night is one not to be missed, as we have much to celebrate. Every team member has contributed to our…

Thursday Night Workout Report February 1st, 2007

Crisp February air welcomed 36 runners to the Daniel Webster statue on Thursday, as the CPTC members prepared for the 1K Special Workout (not to be confused with the Special K Diet). The workout consisted of three hard 1K efforts, followed by a reservoir loop of 10 lamppost pickups. Pre-workout buzz focused on Thom Little s really cool Skeletor gloves, which had to be seen to be believed. Andrea Costella led off the pre-workout announcements with a message on NYRR Club Night, which will once again be held on a Thursday. As Coach Tony will attend Club Night in lieu…

Runners Paradise Weekend

OK, so this weekend we have the 100th running of the Millrose Games at Madison Square Garden on Friday night, we have the two-day New Balance Collegiate Invitational at the Armory on Friday and Saturday afternoon, we have the Night of Sprints meet on Saturday night, and finally we have the annual Gridiron Classic 4 mile road race in Central Park (I liked it better as a 5k) on Super Bowl Sunday morning. Nike Central Park Track Club runners will be competing in ALL of these events. At the Garden we have the 4 X 400 masters men and women…

Catch The Wave

The wave start, that is. Starting with the Gridiron Classic 4 Miler this Sunday, select NYRR races will use the wave starts, where runners will start the race in groups of 500-750 people. Each wave will go off in one or two minute intervals. Only the first coral is seeded; the remaining corals will fill up on a first come, first serve basis. To qualify for the seeded coral, you will need to have run an age-graded performance of 74% or better at a NYRR race (what is so magical about the number 74?). For reference, it takes an age…
