It s the Most Wonderful Time of the Year

The NYRR Points Race Series kicks off this weekend, but another, more important contest is right around the corner. Yes, it s ESPN.com s annual Hottest Athletes poll. Okay, there s nothing about it on their site yet, but they re interviewing all the past winners they can — softball pitcher Jennie Finch (2003), soccer star Heather Mitts (2004), swimmer Amanda Beard (2005 and FHM s World s Sexiest Athlete), and ice-dancer Tanith Belbin (2006) — so clearly this year s competition is right around the corner. (Anna Kournikova won in 2002 but either refused to be interviewed, or the…

Q&A Regarding Club 2007 Club Points Races

Q: Hey, I’m super excited about the new Club Scoring Races this year. However, I’m not an MIT graduate, and I don t know how the fact that we can drop our worst two races impacts our racing strategy. The permutations are mind-boggling! Can you help shed some light on things??? A: This is what journal writers are here for! You don t need to be an MIT grad to understand the basic premise. Just as The Rock said, it just doesn’t matter that we can drop two races this season. For all intents and purposes, we need to show…

Feldenkrais Workshop

Coach Tony has set up a Feldenkrais workshop to be conducted by Jae Greunke. He writes: I have been doing sessions with her and have found them to be not only interesting but key to my recent success. I highly recommend that you check it out. We ll only have space for 15 people so make reservations ASAP by emailing coachtruiz@aol.com. The workshop will be held on Friday, March 2nd, in the early evening. It will last two hours, and will cost $10. This is a very reasonable rate which is being modestly subsidized by CPTC. Here is the description…

The New Bedford Half Marathon

Several of our long distance runners are planning to travel to New Bedford, Massachusetts to run the New Bedford Half Marathon on Sunday, March 18, 2007, at 11:00 a.m. This is a fast and very competitive race, as it is this year s host of the USATF-New England Team Championship. This race would be an excellent tune-up for anybody running the Boston Marathon or another spring marathon. You can register online here. The registration fee is $25 until February 28 and $35 thereafter. Online registration closes on March 13. For more information email Jim McQuade at jmcquade@orrick.com. Having run this…

Club Record at the Boston University Valentine Meet

Some highlights from the BU meet over the weekend. Caryn Waterson was third in the 800, running 2:10.12, which is thisclose to the US National indoor meet qualifying standard, missing it by only 1.62 seconds. Kate Irvin was seventh in the mile, running a season’s best 4:53.36. And Aileen Conlon smashed the Club record in the 3000 meters by over seven seconds, coming in second in her heat, running 9:42.42. Aileen averaged 5:12 mile pace for almost 2 miles. Andrea Costella also ran a PR in the 3000 (10:22.36) which puts her back onto the top ten list.

More From Thursday Night at the Races

In addition to Natalie s hella good win, the other orange spike award (we just made that up; it s kind of like a game ball) goes to Mike Potter, who dropped 4.7 seconds in the 800 over his race two weeks ago. That s more than a second per lap.

Thursday Night at the Races Report

Another large group of CPTC runners ran in the NYRR track meet Thursday night, although, for some reason, Glen Carnes didn t run that night. The mile, being the first event, never seemed to end, lasting from 7:00 – 8:40 PM. Natalie Gingerich won the mile, and broke five minutes, running 4:57.4, becoming only the sixth CPTC woman to run under five minutes. Of course, since Natalie is second on the CPTC 1500 meter list with a 4:27.19, it was not terribly surprising, but still, a significant accomplishment. Full results will be coming shortly.

Track and Cross Country on TV Alert

On Sunday, Friday s Tyson Invitational track meet from Arkansas will be on TV from 1:00 – 3:00 PM on ESPN2. Also on that telecast, there will be coverage of Saturday s USATF Cross Country Champsionships from Boulder (last year it was at Van Cortlandt), which promises to be quite a cross country meet, with almost all of the top US distance runners competing.
